At first they called it the New Badlands—a desolate area out West forged by the same events that altered the entire country. A place where a few scattered, frightened citizens retreated to underground dwellings that provide safety from the brutal weather…and from a society gone terribly dangerous.
It was only after the vampire arrived that they started calling it the Bloodlands.
The name didn’t change because Gabriel, a so-called Monster running from his true self, came there to rediscover his humanity by hunting down the murderer of his lover. It didn’t change because Mariah, the woman who reluctantly took him in, would do anything—even kill—to survive the trials forced upon her and her neighbors.
No, the Badlands officially became the Bloodlands the moment a mortal gun-for-hire decided to slay Gabriel.
Now it’s up to Gabriel to stand up to the threat. But his desire to defend himself--and Mariah--without giving in to his vampire nature will prove to be futile. And when he can't beat the man sworn to kill him with human powers, he has to make a choice: be the Monster he has tried so desperately to escape--or die.
Book Name ~ Bloodlands

Genre ~ post-apocalytpic western fantasy
Where do you live?
In an area out west that they call the New Badlands. It got that name after the terrorists blew off most of the West Coast and freak earthquakes destroyed the old Badlands. Nowadays, some also call it the Bloodlands, but it got that way only after the vampire came out here.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Dallas until it was taken over by the bad guys who didn’t give a thought about breaking into the homes of innocent people or stealing identities on the Nets. The government didn’t give a crap about them—hell, they worked for the government in low-level ways, most times--so my dad and me didn’t have much of a choice in leaving for a more remote place.
How old are you?
What are you called?
My name is Mariah Lyander.
How would you describe your looks??
I’ve got red hair that I slash off at the chin since my looks haven’t much mattered lately. Green eyes. Slim. And I take to dressing in roomy white blouses with lace-up cloth pants and boots.
What kind of childhood did you have?
It was good up until… Well, until my family was attacked. My brother and mom were murdered, but my dad managed to lead me in escaping out to the New Badlands with our Intel Dog, Chaplin.
What do you do for a living?
I survive, just like the rest of us New Badlanders do under the ground in our community. I grow my own hydro-food, farm my own water from an aquifer, and forge my own bullets for my antiquated arsenal. I also watch my visz monitors to see that bad guys from the hubs don’t find us.
How do you deal with conflict and change?
I’m known to be a little off-balance. Because of the Dallas attack, I’m dealing with some trauma.
Who else is in your life?
My dad committed suicide, but Chaplin is still with me: he’s my protector and basically a father figure in a lot of ways. I have neighbors, but I had a falling out with them around the time my dad died. We don’t talk much about why that is. Then the vampire, Gabriel, arrived, and we accepted him into our community…even before we knew there was a monster slayer in the New Badlands.
Of what are you proudest?
In spite of my personal shortcomings, my neighbors have a grudging respect for me. I’ve never gotten used to that, although I think I could.
What was your first date like?
I left Dallas as a teen, before I could really start dating. There were a lot of purity enforcers round there, and my mom was very conservative, always telling me to treat my body as a temple. I might’ve had a date soon enough, except my dad and I had to relocate to a place where there wasn’t really anyone who pulled my trigger, so to say. The closest I’ve ever come to dating is with Gabriel, but that’s another story….
How did you meet the person of your dreams? (if applies)
This is how the book puts it:
“When I saw the stranger weaving through the newly settled dusk on my visz monitor, he looked like a lie—a mirage, half wavering fantasy, half dust in my eyes.”
And it went from there.
Who are your best friends?
Chaplin. Aren’t dogs always our best friends, even Intels?
What did you ask for on your last birthday? What did you get?
I didn’t tell anyone, but for my last birthday, I asked whoever runs the earth for forgiveness. But my neighbors left me some food they’d hunted and Chaplin found a beaded necklace outside; it was real old, but I loved it because it’d probably belonged to someone who’d lost it when they’d trekked out here from a hub.
What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?
That I always have good intentions in my heart, no matter how things turn out.
What is your biggest secret--the one thing you don't want ANYBODY to know?
We’re good at keeping secrets in the New Badlands. We need to be, so I hope you don’t mind if I don’t tell you.
What are you most afraid of?
What do you want more than anything?
To have a quiet life again, like it was before certain people started coming out to the Badlands—people who changed everything.
