Paranormal YA Aspiring Author Kat Deacon - With Giveaway.

Were Vamps Romance is going to do a little something different. We are having a guest post from a aspiring author. Now for the Guest Post...

You’re probably wandering who I am. I wonder that sometimes myself. I’m Kat Deacon and I am a writer. No, wait…seriously I am. I don’t have anything in print or for sale yet, but one day I will. I’ve been living inside my head with countless characters and stories for as long as I can remember. Growing up with a love of books, I lost myself in adventures and fantasy. I learned that a really good book will make you lose yourself between its pages. If the story is compelling enough, it will run through your mind like a movie. When you’re not reading it, you will crave to be devouring its pages like a hunger that can only be sated with knowing the ending.

If you’re a book lover, then you know exactly the feeling I’m describing. It’s exciting to find a book capable of eliciting such exhilarating and powerful feelings. These feelings are what attracted me to writing in the first place. Who wouldn’t want to create something so powerful… you could escape into another world? The really good writers do this with such ease and skill…you hardly noticed when you’ve left your living room and stepped into their alternate reality.

I write Young Adult Paranormal Fiction. I read almost everything. YA paranormals have made a huge wave in fiction today. With Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight leading the pack, YA has hit main stream with a big splash. The YA genre has grown by leaps in the sheer number of books accessible. The category has expanded in new and exciting ways. The quality available today is nothing short of impressive.

I know many of you may be skeptical of reading a genre intended for teens; however I am here to assure you that the YA genre isn’t just for teens anymore! Think of it this way. There are quite a few prime time television shows that are cartoons. These cartoons carry adult themes. In fact, some of these shows shouldn’t be viewed by children at all.

Now for the fun part! I’ve been reading the YA genre for the last seven years extensively. I’m prepared to be your Obe Wan for all things YA today! So go ahead and ask me! If I’ve read it, I will let you know if you should read it. For starters, I’ll clue you in that ANYTHING by Sherrilyn Kenyon YA or otherwise if worth your time. She has a new YA series called the Chronicles of Nick and it

has more fun and laughs in it than you can contain. You will be laughing outloud and then looking around to see if anyone is staring at you like an idiot!

I’ll be giving away a few books for all who comment on my guest blog until the end of the month. These books have my stamp of approval. Trust me, anyone who has read any of the books I’ve recommended has come back to thank me. I promise not to let you down. If you like fun, adventure, and that feeling reminiscent of being young, then I’ll find a book for you. These are the books I hope I am writing. Once I finally get published, I plan on coming back to give a few copies away. In the mean time, please feel free to comment or ask any questions you may have on the YA genre or my journey into the world of a published author. Thanks goes out to Melissa for inviting me for this day of fun on Were Vamps Romance Blogspot!!

I am a huge fan of paranormal books. When I first started reading paranormals were the first books I picked up. I was obsessed with Christopher Pike and RL Stine. I just love being able to escape into a world so unlike my own.

I love, love Chronicles of Nick. I even have my son read them. I read lots of YA because I am always looking for books for my kids. I just finished Clarity by Kim Harrington. I thought it was a really good start. My son is 12 and reads at a 9th grade level. Do you have any recommendations? He really enjoys the James Patterson Angel series.

Hey Kat,

Terrific blog :) *and thank you Melissa for having a fellow aspiring writer--and friend--guest blog*

So Kat, besides Chronicles of Nick (which I agree is a great YA series), what other books or series would you recommend for a teenage boy?

I will have to say Dark Hunters is what really started me on PN series. Yes, I read Twilight before it, but there is something about the DH's. I was worried about Nick's story, but I loved the first one. I hope you do well in publishing and we get to have you back here really soon and a published author!!

Paranormal romance is my favorite genre, but I haven't read many YA books. I do have several in my TBR pile, right now. I love Kenyon but haven't read any of her Nick books, yet. I really need to read them.

Thanks everyone for posting! Jacqui, I would recommend the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, The Chronicles of Vladimir Todd by Heather Brewer is a good one. Th Oz Chronicles by R.W. Ridley is another good series for boys.

Hi Kat I have been thinking of reading the Iron King is it a series you would recommend? Also is there an ongoing YA Series you could suggest? I love long series like those by Sherrilyn Kenyon,

Amanda, I love that series! You're speaking of the Iron series by Julie Kagawa right? Wonderful series to read! Also you might enjoy the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine or the Soul Screamer series by Rachel Vincent. I could name about 25 different series everyone should be reading right now...hmmmmmm might have to do another blog!

I agree that the YA genre is not just for teens I have been reading a few different YA series for a few years now and I haven't been a 'teen' for ten years. :) Good luck with your books.

I know what u mean I love books any and all just about. thanks for the awesome giveaway

Amanda, Glad you are enjoying Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire series! The Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent is about a girl named Kaylee, who finds out she's a banshee. When someone around her is about to die...she screams uncontrollably. She has the power to keep the soul from moving on. As you can imagine, this comes with more trouble than she can handle.

I, too, love anything paranormal, therefore the YA genre. Twilight (I have to admit) was what got me started enjoying reading. I detested reading up until I finished college. Once when on vacation, I picked up the book my sister-in-law was reading (Twilight) and got lost in the book. Ever since then, you can't find me without a book nearby. I don't know what it is... maybe I have more time on my hands now or either since I'm older, I've learned more patience, but whatever it is... I love reading. It's my poison, so I'll be watching out for your work, Kat, and I hope publishing goes quick and easy for you.

Larissa Ione's Demonica world introduced me to the paranormal romance world and it's also the one that got me back into reading. I read in all genres but Paranormal is my first love
